Shapefile to KMZ Converter — free & private

Drop a zipped ESRI Shapefile and get KMZ instantly. Runs fully in your browser. No uploads.

Why KMZ?

  • Smaller than KML (zipped).
  • Easier to share/download.
  • Works great in Google Earth.

If your file is big

  • Use Shapefile Reducer to simplify or batch large datasets.
  • Export polygon-only for AOIs/boundaries.
  • Open the full editor to clean/merge/buffer polygons before export.

FAQ

Is my Shapefile uploaded to a server?
No. The conversion runs locally in your browser. Your Shapefile stays on your device.
What is KMZ and what is inside it?
KMZ is a ZIP archive that contains a KML file. This tool creates a KMZ with a doc.kml inside, which Google Earth can open directly.
What needs to be inside the Shapefile .zip?
At minimum: .shp and .dbf, and ideally .shx too. A .prj file helps detect the coordinate system. All files should share the same base name and be included in the ZIP.
Do you reproject coordinates for Google Earth?
Only in one case. If the .prj indicates Web Mercator (EPSG:3857), you can enable the built-in 3857 to 4326 reprojection. If CRS is unknown or something else, reproject to EPSG:4326 in QGIS or ArcGIS first.
What does “Only keep Polygon / MultiPolygon” do?
It filters the export to polygons only. Points and lines are removed. If your dataset is points or lines, disable that option or use the KML/KMZ converter that keeps all geometry.
Why do my features show generic names in Google Earth?
Google Earth displays the Placemark name. Pick a field like NAME, title, or id as the placemark name. If you keep it on Auto or None, we fall back to Feature 1, Feature 2, and so on.
What is the Description option and what does it include?
Description controls what appears in the Google Earth popup when you click a feature. Table is usually best for readability. JSON is useful for debugging. Off produces a smaller KMZ.
My KMZ is large and base64 output is disabled. Why?
Very large KMZ files can freeze the tab if we render them as base64 text. When the file is huge, we block base64 and you should use Download instead. To shrink the KMZ, export polygons only, turn off Description, or simplify the Shapefile first.
